We had a really nice December Dinner Meeting. Thanks goes out to all of you who brought food to share and especially to Charlene Trochta who played the piano and led us in song for our Christmas program. I am not forgetting about Gene, our resident song leader, and the great job he did in supporting me in my singing, which leaves a lot to be desired! Also, Dallas did a really great job decorating and the room looked really nice, so, thank you Dallas!
It's the start of 2008 and I would really like to see our meeting attendance increase this year, at least at the Dinner Meetings. The programs we schedule are good, the food is always excellent and we strive to ensure all our members and their guests are always welcome at the meetings. We just need you! During the coming year we plan to continue a number of activities for your enjoyment, participation and fellowship. We will continue to have games on the tables in the Freedom Room for your enjoyment before the Dinner Meeting (along with snacks) so come on out early to enjoy. We have the annual "Chili Cook-Off" planned for the Dinner Meeting this month and in future meetings we will have the ROTC Program, a Fish Fry, the Annual Reunion, and a number of "surprises". Also, we are working on a program for the 150 year celebration of the Post building, our Honor Guard Program is really coming along (thanks to Steve and Jason), Joe has some really fine ideas to "spruce" up the Post, and our Boys State/Girls State, Baseball, Oratorical, and Jr. Shooting programs can always use additional volunteers. In helping veterans, George Ruiz, Service and Veterans Affairs Committee Chairman can always use volunteers. This is your Post and it is what you make of it. As another project, we are pursuing the addition of an elevator. Cynthia Miller has started the project and is looking for volunteers. Currently she is looking into what sort of grants are available and working her way through myriad web sites which is no easy task, in her research. If you would like to help in the research, planning and eventually implementation, please let Cynthia or any Post Officer know. More on this as time goes on.

Travis Post 76 had a great turnout at the VA hospital in Temple this year to hand out gifts to the veterans spending their holidays in the hospital. That our Post was one of the largest groups to attend this event speaks well of our dedication to helping our fellow veterans. Our Post has been invited back to the VA hospital in Temple again on February 14 for to assist with a Valentines Day program for the patients. The program starts at 1:30 p.m. Please let me or one of the other officers know if you would like to attend and we can put together a car pool to Temple. Our guest speaker for our January 21st Dinner Meeting will be Kevin Studebaker, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of the Iraqi war. Kevin will be talking about his experiences in Iraq and will have a slide show and souvenirs on display. Please plan to attend what is sure to be an interesting presentation. Our January dinner will be our annual Chili Cook-off. We will be giving prizes to the winners so start planning now to bring your favorite chili. If you’re not competing in the cook-off, please bring an appropriate side dish or dessert. Don’t miss this one - it’s sure to be a hot time at the Post!
For February I hope to have City Council Member Mike Martinez come speak to us and give an update regarding naming the lot in front of our Post “Veterans Park”. The entree for February will be lasagna.
If you have an idea for a guest speaker or suggestions regarding the food at our dinner meetings, please let me know.

The Honor Guard is planning a busy 2008 and is still accepting volunteers. We are pleased to announce another Legionnaire has volunteered to join the Guard. He will be inducted at our January Dinner. Per our new tradition, he will remain anonymous until the induction. But, we will tell you that he is a WWII veteran!! So, be sure to attend to witness this historic event. Another feature you won’t want to miss will be the Formal Presentation of our five new Military Service Flags. This was moved from December due to the Christmas Party.
Our March Dinner meeting will be a new event, the “ROTC Appreciation Dinner & Formal Retreat”. We will be contacting Senior ROTC units at UT and hope to announce the participants at the Dinner Meeting. We decided to focus on Sr ROTC this year and if successful, expand to Jr ROTC next year. Once confirmed we will be looking for more volunteers to act as set up crews, escorts and table hosts. The planned format will be an outside kickoff at 6:30 p.m. with a "Pass in Review" of the School and Post Color Guards followed by a formal retreat with Post Flag, Honor Guard and Bugler. Dinner and Dinner Program then will be upstairs in the Ballroom.
Legionnaires who join the Honor Guard can assist in everything from indoor ceremonies and memorials to outdoor ceremonies, funeral firing details, and parades. We especially need an Armorer who will assist with the M-1 rifles. Take a look at the Post web page for more details. Also, we accept donations and these are used for "Honorships" for new members that may need financial assistance to get their uniforms. Currently we have $100 available.
The Guard meets at 6:00 p.m. every business and dinner meeting for Drill and Rehearsals. Just show up even if you forgot your left foot from your right foot. We need you!

December 2007 was a good month because of eleven [11] rentals of our Post home for weddings and holiday parties. Rental revenue provide the money to operate and maintain this historic building. This income also funds our many programs and activities that benefit so many of the youths.
You can help! Remind your friends and fellow workers of the availability of this historic building for their activities.

If you missed the January Dinner Meeting you missed some good Chili! We had everything from mild to hot-hot, with beans and without beans. We had five entrants for the Chili Cook-Off and I can only say I was glad I was not one of the judges. It was all good.
The formal presentation of all the Military Service Flags (one for each of the five branches of the service) went very well and they are a nice addition to the Post. Our speaker, Kevin Studebaker, U.S.Marine Corps veteran, did an outstanding job in presenting, with slides, some of his experiences while in Iraq. In addition, he put together a display of some of the equipment, pictures and souvenirs from Iraq. All-in-all it was both informative and entertaining. When you see and hear what our troops are doing over there and the conditions of the country they are in, it makes you thankful for being an American and very appreciative of what they are doing and the sacrifices they are making for us. They truly deserve to be in our prayers. I thank Kevin for taking the time to be with us and for sharing his experiences. We have another outstanding program scheduled for our February Dinner Meeting, see the First Vice Commander's Comments for details. I sincerely hope y'all can make it.
One of our on-going projects is to research how we can obtain and install an elevator at the Post. See last month’s newsletter. We are still looking for volunteers to help out in the research and planning stages. Cyndi Miller is our Chairperson heading up the Committee looking into this. This promises to be a very big project and we can use all the help we can get looking into how it can be financed (available grants, fund raisers), what is available on the market, where it should be located in the Post, etc. If you would like to participate please contact Cyndi or any Post Officer.
Mark on your calendar for April 21, 2008. That will be our April Dinner Meeting and will be ROTC Appreciation and Formal Retreat. (Please note this is a change of date from the January newsletter.) Steve Dawson is doing an outstanding job of putting the program together. It will really be special and deserving of a big Post 76 turn out. More on this later.
See all of you at the Post!

Dr. Bauer will be speaking about his experiences during his military career and about opportunities in the Texas State Guard. The entree for February’s dinner will be lasagna. The Honor Guard has been busy this past month. The new Service Flags were formally presented and new Honor Guard member Horace Johnson (Navy Seebee Veteran) was inducted. We have a busy year planned and more members are needed. We still need an Air Force and Coast Guard veteran to join and disprove the theory that Airmen and Coasties can't march. The “ROTC Appreciation Dinner & Formal Retreat” is moved to April 21, 2008 to avoid spring break conflict. Currently accepting invitations to attend are the University of Texas Army, Navy and Marine ROTC departments (Cadre & students).
This will be a big event and all Legionnaires are needed!! Committee heads are: FOOD - Clayton Griffis, ESCORTS & TABLE HOSTS - Frank Webber, SECURITY & PARKING - Derek Israel, SET UP - Steve Dawson, PROGRAM - Al Banzer & Honor Guard. Sign up sheets to help will be at the Dinner meeting or contact any committee head.
The planned format will be an outside kickoff at 6:30 p.m. with a "Pass in Review" of the School and Post Color Guards followed by a formal retreat with Post Flag, Honor Guard and Bugler. Dinner and program will follow upstairs.
The May 18th "Legion Muster and New Member Induction" will be another great event. The Honor Guard will assist Post Officers inducting New and Transfer Members into our Post. The Muster follows Texas Militia tradition dating back to the early 1800's. Most every town had a Militia company which drilled once a month. They came together to drill, swear in new members, hold shooting competitions, have a big dinner and swap lies.
We will follow that tradition. We want every Legionnaire to show up (bring your family). We will induct all new Legionnaires that joined or transfered in since January 2007. Our Junior Shooting Committee will host a shooting range (and maybe a little inter-service competition) with our new air rifles and of course the big meal!
Legionnaires who join the Honor Guard can assist in everything from indoor ceremonies and memorials to outdoor ceremonies, funeral firing details, and parades. We especially need an Armorer who will assist with the M-1 rifles.
Can you play a marching drum? We need a drummer to assist the Honor Guard. Take a look at the Post web page for more details. Also, we accept donations and these are used for "Honorships" for new members that may need financial assistance to get their uniforms. Currently we have $100 available. The Guard meets at 6:00 p.m. every business and dinner meeting for practice. Just show up even if you forgot your left foot from your right foot. We need you!

I attended the Mid-Winter Convention for the Chaplains Workshop, which is associated with the Texas Chaplains Association. We discussed several ideas pertaining to Chaplains.
We had a wonderful turn out for our very first luncheon for the Austin MEA. We had 35 employers and Veterans attend the lunch. Our next lunch will be on March 28. The networking time will start for Veterans to Employers at 1030. The lunch starts at 1130, and goes until 1230. If you are an employer and would like to attend please send me an email to jason.denny@austinmarineea.org - RSVP@AustinMarineEA.org or for INFO@AustinMarineEA.org our website is up and running: www.austinmarineea.org. Please check the site out! If you would like to donate or sponsor a lunch please email me as well. Thank you!
Most of you know that I attended Boys State last year. Well this year I am attending again! I have asked James Crabtree to come back as a Senior Counselor and he has accepted! Paul Barker is attending as well as a Senior Counselor. Some might have known that Paul Barker was a member of the Texas Boys State Committee. Well! Last Fall he stepped down from that role and the Committee Chair (Robert Jackson) & First Seat (Happy Settle) asked me to fill his position. I have gladly accepted that position, and look forward to many years of service on the committee assisting the State of Texas in Boys State.
Along with that information I have decided to run for two positions within the American Legion, Department of Texas, 10th District, Travis Post 76. The first position is within our very own Travis Post 76, and that is the 2nd Vice Commander. I pledge to the members of the Post and members at large that I will take on the responsibility of the main concern as 2nd Vice Commander of the Post and that is “Justice for All”. I will bring the social and recreational benefits to the Post for the members. I will be running on the motto "I like my Post because..." Making the atmosphere that finds Legionnaires having fun while still doing the work of the Legion. The Commander can look to me to spice up the meetings and attract new members to the Post, to build our attendance! I will contact other civic groups and work closely with them so that each patriotic holiday and observance receives the attention it deserves within our community. In pursuit of “Justice for All” I will carry out the concern of the welfare of our fellow veterans, and will work with them to meet their needs. With “Justice for All” and my motto "I like my Post because..." I would be honored to be your Travis Post 76 - 2nd Vice Commander for the year of 2008-2009. Thank you for your vote!
The second position I am running for is American Legion, Department of Texas, 10th District Chaplain. I will be sending letters to all Posts within the the 10th District. I would like the support of Travis Post 76 in this endeavor and privilege of getting elected and serving as the 10th District Chaplain.
Thank you and I will see you at the Post dinner on Feb 18th at 1830!

Preparations for the 150th Anniversary of our beautiful Post building are continuing. Since the State of Texas and City of Austin have designated the Post 76 home as a historical facility, we are responsible for maintaining its structural integrity and appearance reflective of that lofty status. In the late 80’s, the Executive Committee and membership approved a continuing program of 5-year plans to restore, upgrade and maintain our property. In the intervening years, much has been accomplished, but much remains to be done. This includes, painting of the interior, restrooms upgrade, tile floor cleaning and sealing, carpet replacement and the continued normal maintenance and repair. These improvements will insure that our facility will be compatible with other Historical facilities in Austin.

Boys State
At Post 76, we are interviewing Junior high school boys for this American Legion Boys State citizenship program, held on the University of Texas Austin campus, June 7 - 13, 2008. American Legion Boys State began in 1935, an activity of high educational value, born out of a need for youth training in practical citizenship. It is a leadership program in which qualified male high school juniors develop a working knowledge of the structure of government. Something the youth of today need and which will benefit the future of our State and Country. Check the American Legion Department of Texas web site, www.txlegion.org/programs [Boys State] for information and pictures of previous years activities.

The February Dinner Meeting was very good. The talk given by Dr. Charles Bauer, M.D. was outstanding and our thanks go out to him for spending the time with us. He is Deputy Commander of the Medical Brigade of the Texas State Guard and they are always looking for volunteers, not only with medical experience but the need transcends all disciplines from doctors to administrative help. If you wish additional information, contact any officer of the Post.
We have another outstanding program scheduled for our March Dinner Meeting, see the First Vice Commander's Comments for details. Bo th o ur oratorical candidates will be speaking and vying for a $500 scholarship offered by your Post. This will be the first part of our program. The second part we will have Tom Mixon, Ex-Navy Seal talking to us. It will be a great program! I sincerely hope y'all can make it.
Keep in mind April 21, 2008. That will be our April Dinner Meeting and will be our ROTC Appreciation and Formal Retreat program. (See the Honor Guard Corner of this newsletter for the details.) Steve Dawson is doing an outstanding job of putting the program together. It will really be special and deserving of a big Post 76 turn out. We need a good member turn out to show our support for the young men and women who belong to the various branch ROTC's.
April 19-20 at Camp Mabry, we will have a recruit table set up at Muster Day and we can always use help. Every year the festivities at Muster Day seem to get better. In addition to the on site museum, military displays and re-enactments, there are a number of activities for the youngsters as well. It's truly a family affair and I encourage if you haven't been in the past, you need to mark it on your calendar.
On April 19, at 10:30 a.m. the Texas State Cemetery will honor all Texas veterans of the Vietnam War by unveiling a new monument. Lt. General Howell, USMC (Ret.) is the keynote speaker. The 36th Infantry Band from Camp Mabry will be there and will play. All you Vietnam Vets (Oops, didn't mean to exclude all you other vets!) can make a day of it. Start at the Texas State Cemetery in the morning for the unveiling and then go over to Camp Mabry for Muster Day. Sounds like a plan to me!
Need y'all to also mark Sunday, May 18 on your calendar! That's the day of our Legion Muster ( Post Reunion) and New/Transfer Member Induction. It starts at 2:00 p.m. and will consist of outside picnic/cookout festivities. We will have a welcome package for the inductees so a ll of you new/transfer members who joined after January 1, 2007, please RSVP by calling the Post (472-3344) or contact any officer of the Post so we can have your welcome package ready. The list of current officers can be found on our web page, www.travispost76.org. We hope to have this as an annual or semi-annual event.
We have a lot planned and we are pursuing other programs with you, the member, in mind. We do, however, need your support. Our meetings are open to all members and all are welcome. It's your Post and is what you make it to be. See all of you at the Post!

Our guest speaker for our March 17th dinner meeting will be Tom Mixon. Tom is a former U.S. Navy SEAL and member of Red Cell, where he conducted anti/counter-terrorism operations. Following the Navy, Tom has worked in the private security sector (including in Iraq as recently as 2006) and also founded Fit Frog Personal Training where he conducts a unique, boot campstyle physical fitness program that has been adopted by several of Austin’s largest employers. Tom was recently recognized by Austin Fit Magazine as one of the ten fittest people in Austin.
In addition to our featured speaker this month, we are also privileged to have two of our American Legion Oratorical contestants present their speeches, after which we will be awarding scholarship prize money. Our contestants are Samuel Rhea from Hyde Park High School and Darlene King from McCallum Hig h School. Please mark March 17th on your calendar to come enjoy good company, good food, and to give a big “Travis Post 76” welcome to our guest speakers. Also, feel free to wear something green for St. Patrick’s Day! The entrée for March’s dinner will be Sloppy Joes. Please bring side dishes and desserts.
Next month, on April 21st, we will have our first annual ROTC Appreciation Dinner and Formal Retreat at the Post. We are expecting a big turnout with much pageantry and fun as we host several ROTC units and their Color Guards. The entrée will be fried chicken.

In spite of new discrepancies appearing monthly, progress is still being made in the restoration, repair and upgrade of our 150 year old facility. To finish the upstairs ballroom, window drapes will be installed during the month of March. Just in time for our big ROTC gathering. The decision was made not to install ceramic tile on the fireplace facings due to availability and costs. High School Junior boys are still being interviewed and selected for the 2008 Boys State program. This American Legion citizenship program increases knowledge of our political system, therefore, making them better involved citizens. Have you scheduled your family reunion or anniversary yet? The Post facility is looking better all the time.

Ambition, fueled by compassion, wisdom and integrity, is a powerful force for good that will turn the wheels of industry and open the doors of opportunity for you and countless others.
There seems to be a desperate outcry these days in our fast-paced urbanized culture for balance. We hear it from corporate executives who change hats to become soccer-moms on the weekends, then into housewives and community volunteers. It comes from dads, businessmen and professionals during the week, who transition into little league coaches and scoutmasters, then husbands. Each activity carries its own demands, disconnected and separated from the others. How does one find balance in the midst of all these seemingly disparate duties? It’s a different world from life in the rural county where I was raised which was populated by owners of family farms and ranches, and a community located in the center of the county consisting entirely of merchants and businesses that thrived by servicing the farmers and ranchers. Family businesses they all were, and because of that everyone in the family, young and old, were somehow involved and invested in every aspect of life. There was little separation between work and family, friends and neighbors, community activities and spiritual life. All were integrated, which created a sense of unity within families that permeated the broader community.
As an urban dweller for most of my adult life I have also fallen into the trap of compartmentalizing my own life. For thirty years, although my family knew where I worked, I’m not sure they felt invested in what I did. Yes, I rovided a comfortable income and was generally a good person. Yet, what I did throughout the week was probably a bit of a mystery to my family. There was little connection between one activity in our life and another.
Things are certainly different from the days of family farms and businesses. But I cannot help but think there are lessons to be learned from those times. Perhaps what we need today in our fast-paced urbanized culture is not balance but blending. Can we create ways to integrate the complexities of our lives rather than compartmentalize them? Can we blend instead of balance? Somehow I think if we can it will create a greater sense of unity in our families, and perhaps permeate the broader community and the culture.
Also I would like to report the next Austin Marine Executive Association lunch is on March 28.

The March Dinner Meeting was great! The Oratorical Contest, which we had before we ate, went well and both participants, Samuel Rhea of Hyde Park High School, and Darlene King of McCallum High School, provided excellent talks that made you think. Samuel was the winner of the Post's $500 scholarship and Darlene was the winner of the Post's $250 scholarship. Our congratulations to both! After dinner, Tom Mixon, Ex-Navy Seal, gave a great talk on his Iraq experiences. Our thanks to Tom for spending the time with us.
Congratulations are in order for one of our members who, this year, has been a continuous member for 60 years. Our congratulations go out to Dr. W. Firman Haynie! Our April Dinner Meeting, April 21, 2008, promises to be outstanding! It's our first ever ROTC Appreciation and Formal Retreat program and I hope we can make this into an annual affair honoring our ROTC cadets. Steve Dawson has done just an outstanding job of putting the program together. We will have lots of pictures and will post them for all to view. I, for one, am really looking forward to this event! April 19-20 is Muster Day at Camp Mabry. We will have a recruit table set up on Saturday and we can always use help. Every year the festivities at Muster Day seem to get better. For our May Dinner Meeting we will have a change. Instead of the third Monday, we will meet one day earlier on Sunday, May 18 in the afternoon. We will have our annual Legion Muster ( Post Reunion). It starts at 2:00 p.m. and will consist of outside picnic/cookout festivities. We will also have a New/Transfer Member Induction. We will have a welcome package for the inductees so all of you new/transfer members who joined after January 1, 2007, please RSVP by calling the Post (472-3344) or contact any officer of the Post so we can have your welcome package ready. Instead of a regular dinner meeting this month we will hold our “first annual” ROTC Appreciation Dinner & Formal Retreat on Monday, April 21st. The event begins at 6:30 p.m. with a pass in review of school ROTC color guards led by our own Spirit of 76 Honor Guard. The entrée for the event will be fried chicken with mashed potatoes and gravy. Because we will be hosting such a large number of guests, please be sure to bring a side dish (beans, salads, vegetables) or dessert if you come so we’ll be sure to have enough for everyone.
Next month, in lieu of a regular dinner meeting, we will be having our annual Post 76 Reunion & Muster Day. The entrée for this event will be hamburgers and hotdogs. Be sure to invite your friends and family to the Post for some good food, games and story telling. Muster Day will be held on Sunday, May 18th, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Post. Also, don’t forget that Travis Post 76 will have a recruiting table at Camp Mabry’s Annual Muster Day on Saturday, April 19th. This is always a fun event that attracts a lot of visitors. Let me know if you would like to assist in staffing our table.

First, let me welcome Henry Shoenfelt to the Honor Guard. Henry is also a new Legionnaire & Vietnam era Vet. He will also be our Armorer for the M-1's. Our holdup on the completion of the weapons locker is we need a solid wood 1 3/4" thick door. Who can help?
Here's the latest on our “ROTC Appreciation Dinner & Formal Retreat” on April 21.
Accepting invitations to attend are the University of Texas Army, Navy and Marine ROTC departments and Bowie, Travis, and McNeil Jr ROTC (Cadre & Cadets).
About 25 Legionnaires are signed up to pull this off. IMPORTANT POINTS!!!
1. All volunteers should be on the grounds and ready to go not later then 5:00 p.m. (allow for traffic). Some volunteers will be earlier (you know who you are). The Cadets will begin arriving at 5:15 p.m. It will be chaos so everyone be flexible and show them what Vets can do!!
2. ALL Legionnaires plan on parking in the back lots, on the street or under the bridge. The main lot will be for the Cadets/Cadre (100+ guests are expected!!) Exceptions of course, are Handicapped or elderly vets that need close-in parking. If you want to drop off food, the "Dinner Crew" will have someone stationed at the parking lot to assist you. We need to keep the lots as open as possible.
3. Be aware, all the seating spaces in the Ballroom are full except for a Special Table for Legionnaires NOT on committees that can hold only 8-10 max. So, if you are not on a committee, you may be asked to sacrifice for the good of the Legion by eating downstairs and join us for the program later (we will put some extra seats for viewing after dinner).
Direct further questions to your Committee Head. Committee heads are:
FOOD . . .Clayton Griffis
ESCORTS & TABLE HOSTS . . .Frank Webber
SECURITY & PARKING . . . Derek Israel
SET UP . . . Steve Dawson
PROGRAM . . . Al Banzer & Honor Guard
The planned format will be an outside kickoff at 6:30 p.m. with a "Pass in Review" of the Schools and Post Color Guards followed by a formal retreat. Guest Cadre & Legionnaires will have seats on the lawn. The Cadets probably will be standing in formation. Not enough chairs for all.
We will induct all new Legionnaires that joined or transferred in since January 2007 (send your name to Post Commander). Our Junior Shooting Committee will host a shooting range (and maybe a little inter-service competition) with our new air rifles and of course the big meal!
We accept donations which are used for "Honorships" for new members that may need financial assistance to acquire uniforms. Currently we have awarded our existing "Honorships" and the bucket is empty.
The Guard meets at 6:00 p.m. every business and dinner meeting for practice. Just show up even if you forgot your left foot from your right foot. We need you!
We still need an Air Force and Coast Guard veteran as well as Korean War and 1st Gulf War Vet to join the HG. (We want to cover all the bases).

The April Dinner Meeting was just outstanding! This was our first ever program to honor the local Junior ROTC and ROTC cadets. The upstairs was full and the food was great. The program, ROTC Appreciation Dinner and Formal Retreat, went off without a hitch and included an outside program of pass in review by our own Color Guard, Spirit of 76, and the ROTC Color Guards from Bowie HS, Travis HS, McNeil HS, UT Navy and UT Army, followed by the dinner and inside program which included the presentation of the service flags, a few short speeches and representatives from each Junior ROTC and ROTC Unit in attendance also giving a short talk. All-in-all, it was a GREAT program and I heard nothing but good things from those who attended -- Legionnaires, ROTC Cadets and guests alike. My personal thanks to all those who helped put the program together and helped during the program. There are just too many to list. It was a full Legion effort and all the practice really paid off. The Cadets all thanked us for putting on the program and they made it known that they would really like it if we did it again! Good chance this will be an annual event but we may need a bigger room next time! We will be posting pictures on our web site so be sure and check it out.
Remember, this month we will have our Annual Reunion, on Sunday, May 18 , starting at 2:00 p.m. It will be a cookout, like last year, and we will also have new member inductions as well. (We have a welcome kit for you new members so please either call the Post or any Officer of the Post to let us know if you will be coming.) All you new members, either those that joined the Legion or transferred to Post 76 since January, 2007, this is a great time to come on out and meet your fellow Legionnaires and socialize. Find out what the Legion and in particular, what Post 76 is all about. Bring the family! It's a family affair and all are welcome. The Post will supply it all and even cook it for you!
We will NOT have our regular Dinner Meeting on Monday, May 19th, having the reunion on Sunday instead. But, keep in mind, the first Monday of the month at the Post is the membership meeting. Post is open at 5:00 p.m. with the meeting starting at 7:00 p.m. All members are welcome. Yes, Post business is discussed at the meeting but we also encourage the free flow of ideas about the Post; how we can meet the needs of our members; how we can make the Post a better place for the members; how we can better help veterans; involvement in veterans affairs, and the like. It's your Post and we want you involved and active. We need you! See you at the Post!

This month, in lieu of a dinner meeting, we will be having our annual Travis Post 76 Reunion and Muster Day. Be sure to invite your friends and family to this fun event. In addition, we will be recognizing our new Post members. If you haven’t been to the Post in awhile, this is a great time to come and catch up with old friends and learn about our current and future activities. Our Muster Day will be from 2:00–5:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 18th at the Post. There will be hamburgers, hotdogs, music, games, and lots of story telling. Please bring a dessert.

To begin, I have this to say about last months "ROTC Appreciation Dinner & Formal Review" ----- WOW!! What an event!! The cadets, cadres and five school Color Guards just made our first ever event of this type a great success. There were more uniforms on the lawn then have been seen in several decades. The cadets were an inspiration and its good knowing our future leaders are coming from students like this.
Thanks to all who helped make this a success. Thanks to the dinner crew under Clayton Griffis’ able direction. Massive amounts of food were well served. No cadet left hungry. Thanks to Frank Webber and his leadership organizing the escort and table host teams. I think every cadet got a chance to talk to a veteran. Thanks to Derek and his Security/Parking detail. No accidents and everyone got in and out in good order.
Special thanks to the Honor Guard for carrying out our original brainstorm to fruition. All the flags, music, bugling just made for an inspiring military oriented event. And thanks to Commander Al Banzer for a great job as Master of Ceremonies for the event. Seems even old Navy guys can still give commands!!
Since our last newsletter, a Legionnaire has donated $300 to the "Honorship Fund". He is a Navy veteran and wishes to remain anonymous. Thank you for your donation!! Honorships are used to assist any new HG member to help acquire his uniform if he desires some help.
The Post has been invited to Travis High Schools Jr ROTC Awards Banquet. They were one of our honored guests last month. We are allotted 10 seats, and 6 have been spoken for at this writing. The event is May 15, 6:00 p.m. Contact Al Banzer to join our contingent.
Shortly we hope to complete the weapons storage room and order the M-1's. We want the ability to provide proper funeral teams and are needing more members for the HG. We would like a seven man firing detail plus flag folders & a bugler. So please join us.
The Guard meets at 6:00 p.m. every business and dinner meeting for practice. Just show up even if you forgot your left foot from your right foot. We need you! We still need an Air Force and Coast Guard veteran as well as Korean War and current War on Terrorism Vet to join the HG. (We want to cover all the bases) The Austin Wranglers Football team has contacted us to potentially provide a CG for one of their home games sometime this summer and the local AARP chapter is wanting a CG for their convention September 13. So a lot going on. More volunteers being accepted.
On our wish list for donations is someone to oil the pulley at the top of the Post Flagpole and seed money to start our elevator fund. It would be much easier to move food and equipment to the Hall of Honor Ballroom. But most importantly be able to transport our more senior veterans upstairs that are unable to walk.

I have called a few of you to introduce myself to you over the past few months. At Travis Post 76 we have an active membership. With that membership we can do many things together, but we need communication. With that said, please send your email address to adjutant@TravisPost76.org so we can start communicating. I would like to let you know about the Post website: www.TravisPost76.org. My articles in the Post Newsletter usually refer to other topics. The reason for that is that I post a weekly article, if the week started with Thursday, on the Chaplains page for the Post website. Also on that page are prayer requests where you have asked for prayer, and the Post Everlasting. Even a Sick Call section to see whom might need a word of encouragement, from a Post member. If you have a prayer request or would like to notify me about Sick Call, and need prayer send them to: chaplain@TravisPost76.org. With that said here is part two of my article that is posted on the Chaplains page on the Post website:
Have you ever felt the Lord calling you to something really big, maybe a task that seems impossible or a goal that would take years to achieve? Most likely, some aspiration or God-given promise just came to mind. As you think about it, let's consider three common courses of action.
First, we can take a shortcut. After all, if God makes a promise or gives us a goal, wouldn't He want us to attain it as quickly as possible? The answer is, "Not necessarily." God often gives pledges years before He brings it to pass. When we try to manipulate circumstances and "help" the Lord fulfill His promise, we'll surely get in the way of the good things He has in mind for us. We should remember that part of the blessing will be the trust and wisdom gained while waiting.
Second, we can simply quit. Who wants to wait ten years for something? So, we just walk away, forget it, and try not to think about it any more. Just imagine hearing God's promise and then saying, "No, that would take too long. I'd rather move on to something else." What a tragedy!
Third, we can wait patiently and trust God for the blessing. This is clearly the best option, but sadly the one we often avoid. If someone were to say to you, "Ten years from today, I'm going to give you 10 million dollars," what would you say? Most likely, you would not respond, "No, thanks. I want it now or not at all." Why then, do we say that to God? He has tremendous blessings in store for you, if you're willing to wait.
God Bless!

We had a real nice Post Reunion and Muster Day on Sunday, May 18. It was not too hot , the hamburgers were good and all those who attended seemed to have a good time. We also inducted five new members into the Post. I conducted the new member initiation ceremony and each new member received an American Legion ball cap and an American Legion pin.
Congratulations to the new members and welcome to the Post!
On Memorial Day we conducted a flag ceremony at the post and members of the Post and families went to Austin Memorial Cemetery to plant flags. All told we did some 400 flags!
On Armed Forces Day (May 17) George Ruiz and I participated in the Travis County Veterans Service Office's Annual Town Hall Meeting. He and I will briefly discuss our participation at the June Dinner Meeting. We will also have Ms. Jennifer Atkinson from Metz Elementary School as a special guest. See First Vice Commander's Comments. Also, please note that we will have our Post 76 elections for the 2008-2009 term at the June 16th dinner meeting. Please all try to attend. We have a great program and we need your vote. At the time the Nominations Committee presents their slate of officers we will ask for nominations for all positions from the floor. We need your input and this will be a great opportunity to let your views be known.
On June 14th, at 8:00 a.m., a Fun/Run, Peace of Mind 5K, will be held starting at the Capital, Congress and 15th. It is for support of our returning heroes with brain trauma. Our Post will be there in support and I encourage all who are interested to come on out. Check runtex.com for more details. From what I heard, Rick Perry will be there and Willie Nelson will be there too!
On July 4th, we will again do a picnic - hot dogs - starting at 6:00 p.m. and watch the fireworks from the Post's lawn. It should be fun, I know it was last year.
We are looking for volunteers to start up a local Explorer Boy Scout Troop. Any interest please contact me or any Post Officer.
Remember, this is your Post. Get involved, participate, and come on out and show support! See you at the Post!

Following the dinner at this month’s dinner meeting on June 16th, Commander Banzer will call a special meeting to hold elections for officers for` next year. (See the slate as proposed by Nominating Committee) Following the elections, Ms. Jennifer Atkinson from Metz Elementary will a special guest. Jennifer is a teacher at Metz and was instrumental in organizing the Take a Vet to School Day we participated in last Veteran's Day. She has some class letters and cards she would like to share with us and to tell us about her latest class project. After that, Commander Banzer and Service Officer George Ruiz will be reporting on the Travis County Veterans Service Annual Town Hall Meeting they attended (Veterans helping Veterans). The entree for this month’s dinner will be hamburgers. Please bring sides such as beans, corn or salads, and desserts.
Be sure to come to the Post on July 4th. We’ll be providing hotdogs, chips and drinks. You just need to bring your lawn chairs or blankets to watch the fireworks at Zilker Park. You can’t beat this deal – free food and parking, plus there are no crowds. Start time is 6:00 p.m., fireworks begin after dark. Aren’t we’re lucky to be Post 76 Legionnaires?
At next month’s dinner meeting on July 21st I hope to have Mark Lambert with the Austin History Center come talk to us about the Post’s place in Austin history. The entree will be salads.
Do you have a speaker that you want recommend for the Post’s monthly dinner meetings? Do you have some ideas regarding Post activities? If so, let me know. I get many great speaker recommendations from our own Post members, and we’re always looking for new and creative ways to contribute to our community and to help veterans.

The main cause of failure and unhappiness is trading what you want most for what you want now.
Not only is anxiety an uncomfortable feeling, it also leads to negative consequences. Reasoning becomes cloudy when overwhelmed with worry. So an anxious person will have trouble making wise decisions. Fear of failure may also lead to procrastination or a lack of productivity. Apprehensions can devastate personal and spiritual growth, relationships, and work. So conquering fear is important. Steps that can help:
You need to identify the fear. Ask yourself about the circumstances surrounding your feelings and what triggered them. What message are you telling yourself?
Then turn to the Lord. Remember, God loves you and desires an intimate relationship with you. He's in sovereign control of your situation, so bring your fear to Him.
You should rebuke the fear before God. Circumstances are external and often beyond your control. But your response originates within. It's amazing how fears diminish in the Father's presence.
If you have a prayer request or are in need of someone to talk to I'm here for you.

At the June Dinner Meeting we called a special membership meeting for the purpose of electing Post 76 Officers for the 2008-2009 period. I want to thank those in attendance for your support and vote of confidence. The slate of officers as recommended by the Nominating Committee were all elected. As your Commander for the 2008-2009 term I promise you I will do my best to serve you, listen and act on any concerns you may have, and do right by the Post and the American Legion.
We had our July 4th celebration at the Post and about 50 were in attendance. Nice turn out and all seemed to have a good time. Clay did a real nice job with the hot dogs. The fireworks were shifted a little bit this year which worked real well for us.
We got a clear view of all the fireworks! A few guests came, including Ms. Jennifer Atkinson from Metz Elementary School and friends. Glad they could join us especially the Red Beans and Rice dish they brought. A New Orleans recipe that really hit the spot! Cyndi brought some raffle tickets and we did a 50/50 drawing to benefit the Elevator Fund. She collected $50.00 - $25.00 to go to the winner, and the winner, Noreen Bello, a guest of mine, won and she graciously put the money back into the fund. Thank you Noreen!
On June 14 , I and a couple th of other Legionaries did the Fun/Run, Peace of Mind 5K, of which the proceeds went to support our returning heroes with brain trauma. It promises to be an annual event and has the full support of our Governor, Rick Perry, who was there and participated in the run. I suggest our Post support this endeavor in the future. The Town Lake Foundation has the Post rented for their 4th Annual Moonlight Margarita 5K Run and Party. It's Thursday, August 7th at 8:00 p.m. Legionaries are welcome but you must sign up. Go to, www.moonlightmargaritarun.com to sign up. Proceeds go to help protect and enhance the Town Lake Trail.
I, Will Ivie, Jason Denny, Cyndi Miller attended the 90t h Departmental Convention in Corpus Christi. Our Post did very well. Cyndi's Scrapbook of Post 76 Activities for 2007-2008 won First Place and it will now be entered at National.Great job Cyndi! Jason won Chaplain-of-the- Year, a well deserved honor! Congratulations, Jason! Will was sworn in as District 10 Commander, Jason was sworn in as District 10 and Division 3 Chaplain, and Cyndi was sworn in as District 10 and Departmental Historian! Congratulation you guys! You have the full support of Post 76! Good job! FYI, the new Department Commander for 2008-2009, who was elected at the convention, is James McNair.
Before the new term starts, I would like to hold a planning conference on August 16, from 9 to 1 at the Post. The main purpose of this conference, with all the elected officers and others who may wish to participate, is to set the agenda for the 2008-2009 term. This is to include the meeting dates, the activities and Post 76 involvements planned by month, Honor Guard activities, schedule of events by month, ideas to increase the Post rentals and increase the attractiveness of the exterior and interior of the Post, etc. All ideas are welcome and you are encouraged to participate and let us know your thoughts and ideas.
American Legion Riders - I received a request on possibly establishing such a branch associated with Travis Post 76. Are there any bike riders out there? (I know of at least one.) If so, what do y'all think? Please let me or any Post Officer know of your interest.
We are still looking for volunteers who have interest and would like to pursue starting up a local Explorer Boy Scout Troop. Any interest please contact me or any Post Officer.
I received an email request, forwarded by James Crabtree, for assistance. Lima Company, US Marines, stationed in Iraq suffered loss of most of their personal belongings as a result of a fire that swept through their camp. They are in need of personal items such as tee shirts, underwear, socks, razors, flip flops, toothpaste, tooth brushes, pillows, etc. If you plan on attending the July Dinner Meeting, I am requesting that you bring in donations. The Post will pursue sending the package(s).
Remember, this is your Post. Get involved, participate, and come on out and show support!
See you at the Post!

The guest speaker for our July 21st dinner meeting will be Mark Lambert with the Austin History Center. Mark will be doing a presentation on Texas Governor Elisha Pease. Governor Pease was Governor of Texas just before the Civil War, 1853-1857, and just afterwards, 1867-1869, and so he dealt with some interesting issues while in office. Governor Pease’s family were also responsible for developing part of west Austin. Our speaker, Mark Lambert, is a veteran himself, having served in both the U.S. Marine Corps and the Texas Army National Guard. Please come out on the 21st to hear what is sure to be an interesting presentation. The entree will be salads – pasta, pea, potato, garden, etc. Please bring salads, breads, or desserts.
At next month’s dinner meeting on August 18th, we will be installing our new officers for 2008-2009. The entree will be BBQ.
NOTE: There will NOT be an Executive Committee meeting/Post Work Day this month on July 12.

The Honor Guard held elections this month for the 2008/2009 session. New Officers are Honor Guard Commander - Steve Dawson (Vietnam) and Honor Guard Assistant Commander - Henry Shoenfelt (Vietnam). Members include Cyndi Miller (Granada/Lebanon), Horace Wilson (WWII), Jason Denny (Gulf War), & Will Ivie (Vietnam).
We have a busy 2nd half of the year coming up and more volunteers are needed. Post Commander Al Banzer is submitting paperwork to get the M-1's. We will develop our funeral firing detail and ceremonial firing team once they arrive. Big Veterans Day Parade, TX Capital Memorial, & Veterans Tree Planting events are coming up.
Again, we need more veterans to join our team. We also have available $200 in Honorships (donated by an anonymous Navy vet) for new recruits to help offset uniform costs.
Congrats to Cyndi for her first "Taps" bugle performance on Memorial Day!! Thanks to Will & Henry for helping me on getting the "armory" installed and secured.

At the July Dinner Meeting our speaker was Mark Lambert from the Austin History Center. He gave a presentation on Texas Governor Pease that was very informative. If you missed the dinner meeting, you missed a good presentation. We also tried something new for dinner this time, had just salads, and I think that went very well. We will probably be doing the salad thing again in the near future.
Will Ivie, Cyndi Miller and I went out to the airport on August 1st to welcome home a returning soldier from Iraq. In addition to us, there were also some VFW folks and some folks from the Texas Veterans Commission. We were informed by his mother of his return. His name is Brandon Gilley and he is just 19. KEYE news, channel 42, was there and Will gave a great interview. All three of us made the news that night with Cyndi and I both having cameo appearances. In Brandon's interview he thanked the veterans for coming out and welcoming him home. Wish we could of had more of us out there, maybe next time.
As an aside, while we have some, we don't have a number of email addresses for our members. If you have an email address, please let us know what it is so we can contact you if need be and keep you timely informed about the Post's activities. You can send to me at, alfred.banzer@verizon.com or Cyndi Miller at, miller5019@sbcglobal.net, or Will Ivie at, wwiviecpa@sbcglobal.net.
Remember, the installation of Post 76 Officers will be held at the August Dinner Meeting, August 18th. Please mark it on your calendar and plan to come on out to the Post and show your support.
Please keep in mind Saturday, August 16th, 9-1, at the Post. That's the date I plan on having a planning conference with all the newly elected officers, and any other interested party, to map out our plan for the year and set the agenda for the 2008-2009 term. The more involvement, the better. We can always use new ideas and encourage each of you to let us know how you feel about the Post, what you would like the Post to be doing, how involved and in what activities you see the Post as being active participants in. Your input is important and we need it. Come on out and express your views.
I know November seems like a long way away but it will be here before you know it. November 11th is Veterans Day and we are starting to plan our activities. Similar to last year,we are planning to have an early breakfast at the Post, muster for the parade, participate in the Austin Veterans Day Parade, participate in the wreath ceremony at the Capital, and we'll see what else. As we get closer to the time, we will be sending out more information. In the mean time, keep the date in mind and plan on participating in the Veterans Day activities. If you all recall, November was a very busy month last year not only with Veterans Day and Thanksgiving but we also participated in the Metz Elementary School's “Take a Vet to School Day”, the Veteran's Day of Thanks at the Pan American Rec. Center, and the City of Austin's Veterans Day Tree Planting activities. This year will also be busy so we can use all of you as active participants. Please plan on being involved.
In last months newsletter I included a short paragraph on the American Legion Riders and the fact I received a request on possibly establishing such a branch associated with Travis Post 76. I have not heard back from anyone yet. Are there any bike riders out there? (I know of at least one.) If so, what do y'all think? Please let me or any Post Officer know of your interest.

At our August 18th dinner meeting we will be installing new Post officers for the upcoming year. Our guest speaker will be Roy Dalton, 10th District Vice Commander. The entrée will be BBQ. Members are asked to bring side dishes such as potato salad, beans, cole slaw, or a dessert. Please be sure to come out on the 18th to congratulate and show your support for our new group of officers.
In September, we will be having our annual Boys/Girls State dinner program at the Post. This is always a rewarding opportunity for our Post to recognize the fine young people who participated in this year’s Boys/Girls State program, and get a chance to hear from them about their experience. The dinner will be held upstairs to accommodate the students and their guests. The entrée will be fried chicken. The Post will provide the chicken, mashed potatoes, and gravy. Members are asked to bring side dishes such as beans or corn, or a dessert.

We really had a great turn out at the August Social Meeting for the installation of your new officers for the 2008-2009 year. Thank you all for coming and showing your support. Clay did a super job on the BBQ, and the side dishes - organizing the whole thing - thank you, Clay.
I thought Roy Dalton, 10th District Vice Commander, did a super job in getting all the officers sworn in and the program was just really great. Thank you, Roy, for coming out, doing the installation and for joining us in our social activities Monday evening! Also, I want to thank Charles Matheson for doing the program again this year. He did a very professional job. It looked great and I received many compliments on it.
Continuing with the social news, don't forget and be sure you mark it on your calendar, September 15th, Boys State and Girls State Dinner. Come on out and show your support. As it was last year, we have a really great program lined up for this year. It will be in the upstairs ballroom. We will have plenty of room, will have good food and we will have some of the brightest and best young adults coming! Please come on out and join in the festivities! Love to see you all!
The Parks and Recreation Board Committee had a meeting on August 19th and one of the items on the agenda was the naming of the park that is just below or south of our Post, on the corner of Veterans Drive and Atlanta Street. I made our pitch to the Committee that the name of the Park needs to be Veterans Park. Based on the information I have to date, it appears that the Committee will recommend to the full Board that the park be officially named Veterans Park. The full Board meets on September 23rd and I plan to attend to fully support the naming of the park. My thanks to Derek, Cyndi, Jason and George for coming out to the Committee meeting with me and providing support. Double thanks to Jason, for without his commitment, drive and high interest in the park naming project, it would not have been done.
On Saturday, September 13th, from 9:00 a.m. to 2:00p.m. in Wozniak Hall at St. Louis Church on 7601 Burnet Road, AARP is having an open meeting titled, “Divided We Fail Day 2008". Learn about senior services and programs. There will be guest speakers, exhibitors and information booths, free lunch (yes, free!), free health screenings and cash door prizes. Best of all, they have invited, and we have accepted, our honor guard to post the colors and take part in the opening ceremonies.
The October Post Social, Monday, October 20th, will include new member induction. Mark that on your calendar and you new members, those that joined the Post since January of this year, please contact any Post Officer to let us know you will be coming so we can prepare and have your welcome package ready.
I have been getting emails with member email addresses and I thank you for providing them. A reminder! If you have an email address, please let us know what it is so we can contact you if need be and keep you timely informed about the Post's activities. Hello, everyone! We had a great post social last month and Clay did a great job. We had a big turn out for the induction of new officers.
September is the Boys State/Girls State dinner. We will be having fried chicken and mashed potatoes. Please remember this will be a larger crowd than our usual dinners, so larger portions of the dish you bring to complement the fried chicken will be needed. Thanks for everyone's help.

The Honor Guard has a busy Fall lined up and we are still taking volunteers. Join the guard and be a part of the action of most events, not just a spectator. For new legion members, see our updated FAQ's on the post webpage http://travispost76.org.
Currently we have available $200 in Honorships donated by a Navy vet to assist a new member in acquiring his uniform. The word around the Texas legion is that "The Spirit of 76" has the sharpest uniform representing both the rich Texas militia spirit and the American Legion tradition. No experience needed ..... no wait .... you have to have been a U.S. Military Veteran and ready to serve in uniform again.

Boys & Girls State Dinner
The American Legion Post 76 sponsored many boys and girls who were junior students, to the 2008 Boys and Girls State programs. These students are now seniors at their respective schools. They were selected because of their outstanding academic records and extra curricular activities. They are the "cream of the crop." Come to the Monday, September 15th dinner, and get acquainted with these young people as they share their experiences after attending these citizenship programs.

The September Post Social was well attended for the hosted Boys State and Girls State Dinner. The dinner committee did a great job, our Spirit of 76 Honor Guard looked very impressive with the posting of the Colors and the program with Joe Trochta and Paul Barker leading for Boys State and Pat Ivie for Girls State went well. The comments during the Program by James Crabtree and Jason Denny added a lot to the program and I thank them for participating.
The next Post Social will be on October 20th and the theme will be Halloween! Come on out in costume. Prizes, to be determined, will be awarded. We have a great program planned, with a great speaker. We will also have new member induction. All new members, those joining the Legion or transferring to Post 76 on and after January, 2008, are encouraged to attend. (We have a welcome kit for you new members so please either call the Post or any Officer of the Post to let us know if you will be coming). Find out what the Legion and in particular, what Post 76 is all about. You can even dress in costume if you like! Meet other members of Post 76 and bring the family! It's a Post Social meeting, so come on out!
The Parks and Recreation Board met on September 23rd at City Hall and one of the items on the agenda was the naming of the park that is just below or south of our Post, on the corner of Veterans Drive and Atlanta Street. I attended and after a little discussion, the Board voted, 5-0, to name the Park, Veterans Park, as our Post recommended. It now goes to the City Council and is on the Agenda for the November 6th City Council Meeting. I plan to attend that as well.
Next month will be real busy and we would like to see as many of you participate as we can. On November 7th we will, as last year, participate in Take a Vet to School day at Metz Elementary. They will have breakfast for us at Metz starting at 7:45 a.m. with the program to follow. We then split up and attend the various classes to talk to the students. Those of us who did this last year found it very rewarding and well worth while. The teachers and especially the students are great!
We will participate, along with our Honor Guard, at the City of Austin Veterans Tree Planting Ceremony planned for Saturday, November 8th, at Rosewood Park. It starts at 10:00 a.m., so we need to be there no later than 9:00 a.m.
On November 11th we will host a breakfast for all members and guests starting at 7:15 a.m. Those wishing to help with the cooking and set up, please plan on being at the Post at 6:00 a.m. After breakfast we will muster on the Congress Street bridge for the parade. We again will hook up with the Military Vehicle Association, marching just in front of them, and those that want to ride, can ride in the reconditioned WW II vehicles. Our thanks to Danny Kaiser of the Texas Association of Vietnam Veterans for arranging this again this year. After the parade, which ends at the Capital, there will be a wreath laying ceremony. We will participate in that, so stick around for the program on the Capital grounds. It was very impressive last year and I think you all will find it rewarding.
On November 15th, we will also participate in the 2008 Austin Stand Down from 9:00 to 2:00, at the Pan American Recreation Center at 2100 E. 3rd St. to benefit the homeless veterans of Austin. We are looking for volunteers so if interested, contact me or George Ruiz (443-7232) or meet us at the Pan Am. Rec. Center around 8:30 a.m.
The Westlake Rotary is having a program to honor all veterans on November 10th, starting at 4:00 p.m, at the Texas Disposal Systems Exotic Game Ranch. It's located South of Austin, Exit 223 off of I-35 (east on FM 1327), Post can provide directions. It is a hosted reception and dinner with a very special guest giving the address. Tickets are $100 a couple (which is half the ticket price for non-veterans). They are requesting RSVP at www.westlakerotary.org. Check our web page for more information or stop by the Post.
Remember, November 4th is Election Day, get out and vote!
I hope you didn’t forget the Executive Committee Meeting on Saturday, October 11th at 9:00 a.m. followed at 10:30 a.m. with the Post clean up/fix up projects. Remember, this is your Post. Get involved, participate, and come on out and show support!
One final comment, for you bikers out there or biker wanna-a-bees. On November 1st there will be the South Texas Veterans Health Care System's 8th Annual "To Hell and Back" Biker Rally leaving from Bandera City Park, Bandera, Texas, at 10:30 a.m. Registration is from 9:00 to 10:30 a.m. at Bandera City Park. All profits go to veterans participating in the 2009 National Veterans Creative Arts Festival. Check ourweb page for further information or you may contact Ulani Levy at 210-617-5107.
See you at the Post!

October’s Social will be a special meeting besides the "Induction of New Legionnaires" to our Post. The Honor Guard will also induct a new volunteer, Patrick Moore-Vietnam Era, US Army. Patrick is transferring in from another post because ours "does stuff" vs his old post being dormant and boring.
November is our month! Several big HG related events are planned including the City of Austin’s Veterans Day Tree Planting Ceremony (date TBA-probably November 15 - awaiting confirmation) at Rosewood Park, 2300 Rosewood Ave. 78702. The City of Austin has again invited our HG to handle the opening & closing ceremony. We had a great turnout of Legionnaires last year. This year let’s make it bigger!! A bunch of politicians show up and they need to see us!!
November 11, Veterans Day Breakfast & Parade. This is the BIG ONE!! Arrange to get off work, we need you! If we don’t turn out, the public will forget the sacrifices of our fellow service members that paid the ultimate price and can’t be there to march with us.
Like last year, the Mechanized Platoon will be for our Vets that cant walk the length of the parade due to age or incapacity and need to ride. We want everyone in the parade. Look for Horace Wilson with the Legion Flag in the lead vehicle. The Mech Platoon will be WWII vehicles right behind our Marching Platoon.
The Marching Platoon will expand this year. Carrying the Legion banner & leading from the front in the 1st Rank will be Commander Al Banzer & 2nd Vice Cmdr Derrick Israel. Following will be our uniformed "Spirit of 76" Honor Guard w/ US, TX, POW flags, & rifles (Will Ivie, Jason Denny, Pat Moore, Henry Shoenfeld, Cyndi Miller, Steve Dawson). The 3rd rank will be five volunteers carrying our new Service Flags (Army, Navy, CG, AF, Marine). (Clayton Griffis & Jason Borden have stepped up for this honor and we need three more Legionnaires to pull this off; contact us immediately to help). The Service Flag Detail will wear long sleeve white shirts, blue pants, black shoes & the "Stars" Legion Ball Cap (for high visibility & eye shade protection).
The 4th rank (and on) will be other Legionnaires, veterans, family and friends. We encourage all others in both "platoons" to wear your old military uniform or a combination of Legion colors, ie Blue, Gold(yellow/Khaki), White.
It will be awesome. Be a part of the action!!

We had a good turn out for the October Social and New Member Induction. Didn't get too many in costume for our Halloween Party, but maybe next year? The following new members were welcomed into the Legion and/or to Travis Post 76; Patrick Moore, Kevin Studebaker, Tom Watkins, Larry Keiser and Olie Pope. They all received the Post's welcome kit and we are looking forward to many years of comradeship. As we say in the Navy, "Welcome aboard!". During the October meeting we also heard from Brad Pack from the Sons of American Legion and Madeline Seydler, President 10th District Auxiliary. They were welcome guests, said a few words and shared information with us. Larry Keiser and Tom Watkins also got together to discuss maybe starting up an American Legion Riders Chapter in Post 76. So, any of you out there who might be interested, please let me, Larry and/or Tom know. As I talked about in last months newsletter, November is a very busy month with most of the activities revolving around Veterans Day. Copies of the November Post Calendar are available at the Post and I encourage you to swing by and pick one up. Or, I can email you a copy of the calendar if you like, just let me know. Check out the First Vice Commander's column for news on our Thanksgiving Social and program we have planned for November 17th. Turkey and all that goes with it, with y'alls help, so plan on coming out!
Similar to past years, the Post again will be making a contribution to KLBJ's phone card campaign which provides phone cards to service men and women oversees so they can phone home. In addition to the Post's contribution we will be "passing the hat" at the Veterans Day Breakfast to supplement our phone card contribution and I encourage y'all to provide what ever contribution to the fund you would like. Remember, breakfast starts at 7:15 a.m. and we can car pool to the Ann Richards Congress Avenue Bridge for the parade. We can always use cooks and helpers so come on out to the Post early! Also, if you are aware of any veterans, either members of the Post or not, please feel free to invite them to the breakfast. They, and their families, are welcome not only to the breakfast but also to participate in the parade. We haveplenty of room in the military vehicles for people to ride or, of course, they are welcome to march with us.
Keep in mind that on November 15th, we will also participate in the 2008 Austin Stand Down from 9:00 to 2:00 at the Pan American Recreation Center at 2100 E. 3rd St. to benefit the homeless veterans of Austin. We are looking for volunteers so if interested, contact me or George Ruiz (443-7232) or meet us at the Pan American Recreation Center around 8:30 a.m.
The Executive Committee Meeting and post projects scheduled for November 22nd has been canceled as was the one planned for December. Instead, we will be having a Christmas decorating party at the Post on Sunday, December 7th, starting at 1:00 p.m. Bring the entire family! Our plan is to make this fun and involve the entire family. Plan on coming out to the Post on Sunday afternoon, spend part or all of the afternoon and help decorate! Speaking of December, never too early to plan for our Christmas Party. Our Christmas Social is planned for December 15th. More about that in our December Newsletter.
One final comment, thank you to Leonora Schlueter, widow of Walter Schlueter, for the very nice note and generous contribution to Boys State in Walter's name. Believe me, it was Sean and my pleasure to pay respects and conduct the Legion ceremony for Walter. Remember, this is your Post. Get involved, participate, and come on out and show support!
See you at the Post!

October dinner social Jim Mickler was our speaker and gave us lot of good information on the great offers the Texas Veteran's Land Board has for all Texas Veterans. There was information on home and land loans, veteran's homes, home improvement loans. We greatly enjoyed his talk and learned a lot, too.
Do not forget the dinner social on November 17th, with turkey as our entree with our special speaker.
There will not be an executive committee meeting in November or December. Remember our Veteran's Day events beginning November 7th, and hope to see all there.

The Honor Guard swore in a new member at the October meeting. Welcome to Legionnaire Patrick Moore - Army & Vietnam era veteran. The guard is still accepting new members. We are especially looking for someone to represent Korea, Gulf War & Global War on Terrorism as well as Marine, Air Force & Coast Guard vets. Step forward and answer the call to duty!!
Our thanks to our anonymous Navy vet who contributed $600 to our Honorship Program to help new members outfit their uniform. The donations were very welcomed and well spent.
After one full year of operation, we are pleased to say all the needed Flags and equipment have been purchased. The new safe awaits the M-1's.
On another note, we need a legionnaire with the drive and Internet searching skills to find some grants and/or donations to help us move forward on getting an elevator installed so our older members can have access to the second floor. This would help rentals also, as Ms. Ruthie Rental would be able to invite her favorite uncle in a wheelchair to attend her wedding reception. But since the 2nd floor is inaccessible to people like him, she decided to have her reception elsewhere. So, we need help.

We had a great turnout for our Thanksgiving Party! The turkey and all the trimmings, not to mention the desserts, hit the spot and if you went away hungry, it was your own fault. A BIG thank you to Will and Pat Ivie for cooking the turkeys and carving them up for our party. For those who brought side dishes and desserts, thanks go out to all of you as well. We also had a really good speaker, Lt. Col. Douglas Oldmixon. He showed us slides and did a great job of narrating as he reviewed with us his last tour of duty in Iraq, which was January through March of this year. He is also Ex. Director of the Texas Veterans Land Board. After his presentation he entertained questions and presented the Post with an American flag, with certificate, that it was flown over the base at Baghdad, Iraq. That was totally unexpected and really appreciated. Thank you!
Last month was busy. The Veterans Day Breakfast at the Post and the parade were very well attended by members. We almost ran out of room at the breakfast which is great. Our Honor Guard and member support carrying the service flags at the parade looked really great! We made it on a couple of news reports, did y'all catch any of the news to see us? We also participated in the wreath laying ceremony at the Capital after the parade. Your Post was well represented at the Metz Elementary School's Take a Vet to School Day, the City of Austin Veterans Tree Planting, where our Honor Guard did the honors of posting the colors, and on November 15th, David Parkhill and I joined George Ruiz at the Pan American Rec. Center to assist in the 2008 Stand Down. As per George, we had over 150 homeless vets pass through and they were provided with shoes, cloths, backpacks, sleeping bags, socks, toiletries, etc. Vets helping Vets. My thanks to Dave for helping out. Derek Israel and I attended a City Counsel meeting on Nov. 6th where the proposal to name Veterans Park was on the agenda. I got to say a few words in support of it and it was passed by the City. So, our little area south of the Post between the Post and Veterans Drive, is now officially called Veterans Park. The City will be putting up a sign to that effect in the near future.
Check out the First Vice Commander's comments on the planned Christmas Party at the Post. Maybe Santa will make an appearance this year. Do you think?
The Department's 2009 Mid Winter Convention is January 22-25, 2009 at the Omni Southpark Hotel here in Austin. It's local so this is a great chance for all of you to come on out, show support and participate. There will be workshops and training sessions so this is also a great opportunity to learn about the Legion and what the duties, roles, and responsibilities are of the various officer positions. Check the Department's Web page (www.txlegion.org) for more detailed information. Click on Conventions,MidWinter. We are also considering having a table at the convention to display what Post 76 is all about and perhaps have a raffle or "take a chance" drawing. For a raffle or drawing we will need a donation or two, or more. Anyone have an item or two to donate that they believe will be a nice raffle and/or a drawing chance item? Has to be something you would pay a dollar, or more, for a chance to win. Let's get involved! We need your participation in some form. If you can't make it to the Convention, maybe you have something you would like to contribute to a raffle/drawing? Contact any officer of the Post and let him/her know. Proceeds from the raffle/drawing will go towards our elevator fund.
Let us not lose sight of the meaning of Christmas... Your Post will, again this year, be going to the Veterans Hospital in Temple on December 19th. We will meet at the Post early Friday morning (6ish) and car pool to Temple. The Post will be making a monetary contribution but I will also like for the members to contribute what they can as well. At the Christmas Party we will have a box set up for donations and we will also accept cash and checks that can be made at the Party, or you can mail it to the Post, that will supplement the contribution the Post is making. Remember, 100% of what you donate will make its way to the Veterans Hospital to benefit veterans. Veterans helping veterans.
Remember, this is your Post. It is what you make it to be. Get involved, participate, and come on out and show support! Have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! See you at the Post!

This is the last month in the 2008 membership year. As of the 1st of December, we have 361 members paid for the 2009 membership year. Thanks to these members. For Membership year 2009, Department of Texas has set a goal of 388 members for Post 76. In order to be recognized for membership awards, we must submit your 2009 membership prior to December 31, 2008. Last year we met our goal after the New Year began. Please consider submitting your renewal as soon as possible. Dues are currently $ 26.00. The Post remits the entire dues amount to Department and National to help fund the programs of the American Legion. You may send your dues to P. O. Box 1214, Austin, Texas 78767. Thanks in advance.

Veterans Day month activities were again very patriotic and important part of Post 76 activities! Thanks to the following HG members for the great Colors presentation at the City of Austin Tree Planting honoring Veterans: Will Ivie, Cyndi Miller, Horace Johnson, & Henry Shoenfelt. This was our debut of "Reverse Colors, March", and if I may say so myself, it was executed flawlessly. In addition to the just mentioned, they also marched in the Veterans Day parade with the exception of Horace who proudly flew the Legion Flag from a WWII truck following our marching contingent. Thanks to Patrick Moore and Jason Denny for rounding out the Honor Guard. We made the 6 o’clock news video on several TV channels.
This year we added a second row of Legionnaires carrying our Service Flags. Thanks for the great job to: Jason Borden, Mike Finn, Mike McNamara, Tom Watkins and Clayton Griffis. And of course, leading the way carrying our Legion Banner was our Post Commander and 2nd Vice Commander-Al Banzer and Derek Israel.
The Honor Guard is accepting new members for the 2009 year. See website for more details. As a special thanks on our one year anniversary, I want to thank Jason Denny for helping me with the original vision kicking this off. I also want to recognize Will Ivie, who was our third member and has participated in every event and drill we have had since inception! Thanks to both!
We would really like someone to represent Korea, Gulf War & Global War on Terrorism to join us as well as an Air Force & Coast Guard vet. Step forward and answer the call to duty!! We are also accepting monetary donations that are only used for "Honorships" to assist deserving members in getting their uniform assembled. Our Post does give a "Presentation Package" to new members consisting of Legion patches, shoulder & hat cords, ascot, gloves & brass '76', but everything else is covered by our members.
In a continuing request, we need a legionnaire with the drive and Internet searching skills to find some grants and/or donations to help us move forward on getting an elevator installed so our older members can have access to the second floor. This would help rentals also, for example, Ms. Ruthie Rental would be able to invite her favorite uncle, who's in a wheelchair to attend her wedding reception. But since the 2nd floor is inaccessible to people like him, she decided to have her reception elsewhere.
So, that’s a rental we lose. Or you may be looking for a place to make a year end charitable donation of cash or securities –PLEASE think of our elevator fund. (Note-the full value of a securities donation is your cost plus any gain is deductible).

Decembers dinner meeting is on the 15th and we are having finger foods. Also, we are going to collect can goods and nonperishable foods on this day. Please bring your dish and a food item to donate. We hope to have a big crowd to socialize, we will not be singing this year as in the past. Thank you to our speaker in November, we greatly enjoyed his presentation.
Mark your calendars - the Oratorical contest is January 11, 2009, at the San Marcos post. And mark your calendar for the Mid-Winter conference at the Omni hotel in Austin, January 22 -25, 2009. All should attend. There are workshops to take and meeting other legionnaires. Happy Holidays!
